Comrade Bronski: The country...the Soviet Union
Hand-drawn with pen, cloth and brush
India ink on 210gsm card
297 x 210mm (11.7 x 8.3 inches)
Co-created by Mike with Alan Hebden and Carlos Ezquerra, Comrade Bronski first appeared in EAGLE no. 259 in April, 1987. Bronski appeared in 27 issues until no. 283 in August, 1987.
A disgraced former KGB agent, Bronski was recalled from a Soviet labour camp to join the Special Directorate, a newly-formed secret unit intended to combat corruption. As with Hellman of Hammer Force, Bronski was a conflicted character for the readers of EAGLE; as a KGB member he is an enemy but as a fighter against the corrupt USSR, he is a hero. Bronski lacked Hellman’s honour, however, and was a brutish and violent character.
In this artwork, Comrade Bronski appears in Red Square, Moscow, with the Kremlin behind him. Bronski brandishes his Tokarev pistol whilst sporting - perhaps erroneously! - an Old Harrovians’ tie.
